Speed Spell

Each word flashes up (and is spoken where your device can), then hides. Spell it from memory, letter by letter, from a key deck full of look-alike decoys — tap the keys or type on your keyboard. One wrong key misspells the word and a word that runs out of time is lost: either costs a heart. Words get longer as your run heats up.

The ladder

Every 3 words you climb a rung: longer words, more decoys, a little less time per letter.

A wrong key or a timed-out word costs a heart; lose all three and the round ends early. 10 words in a row win a heart back.

About Speed Spell

Speed Spell is a fast spelling game. A word flashes up, then hides, and you spell it from memory one letter at a time using the key deck, while decoy keys try to trip you up.

How to play

  • Each word flashes for a moment (and is read aloud where your device supports it), then hides. Tap the letters in order, or type them. Each correct letter reappears in the word. Peek shows it again, but the word clock keeps running.
  • A decoy or wrong key misspells the word and costs a heart, and so does running out of time. Lose all three and the round ends.
  • Every three words the words get longer, and 10 in a row win a heart back. Your score is words per minute for the whole round.

Controls

Tap the on-screen keys, or type on a physical keyboard.

More about Speed Spell

Speed Spell trains short-term visual memory and quick, accurate typing at once. A word is shown for a brief moment, sometimes spoken aloud, and then disappears. You have to hold the letters in your head and pick them out one by one from a deck that also contains look-alike decoy keys, so a half-remembered letter can easily lead to a mistake.

You choose a round of 30, 60 or 90 seconds. Every three words you climb a rung on a ladder of word lengths: Easy runs from three to five letters, Medium from four to seven and Hard from five to eight. Each rung brings more decoys and a little less time per letter. Fixed paces of five, three or two seconds per word are also available, and the two tight paces use short words only.

Scoring and progress

Your score is words per minute for the whole round, and a best is kept for each difficulty. Grades from S to D come from that rate, with lower thresholds on Hard because its words are longer, and running out of hearts caps the grade at B or below, down to C. A misspelled or timed-out word costs a heart, and every ten words in a row wins one back, up to five hearts.

Common questions

Can I type on a keyboard?
Yes. Just type the letters of the word, or tap the on-screen keys. P or Escape pauses.

What does Peek do?
It shows the word again, but your time for that word keeps counting down.

Is Speed Spell free?
It is a Premium game, part of Streaky Premium.

Tips and strategy

  • Spell the word as a sound, not only as a picture. Saying it in your head helps when the preview is short.
  • Watch for look-alike decoys. Half the decoy keys resemble letters in the word, so check a key before you press it.
  • Use Peek when you are truly unsure, but remember the word clock keeps running. A peek is cheaper than losing a heart, but it takes time off the word.
  • Start typing during the flash if you are confident. Typing while the word is visible starts the word early.
  • Pick the pace that fits your goal. The shorter rounds reward bursts of accuracy, while a 90-second round rewards steady, low-error spelling.
  • Protect your hearts first and your speed second. A clean ten-word streak gives a heart back, which is worth more than a few saved seconds.
