Letter Lock

Crack the hidden word before your tries run out. Locked tiles are right where they belong, loose ones are in the word but somewhere else. Play the shared daily, an endless run of 5, 6 or 7-letter words that lasts until one beats you, or the new Lock Chain: a 2-minute race where every word you crack becomes the first guess of the next one.

About Letter Lock

Letter Lock is a word puzzle where you work out a hidden word from the clues each guess reveals. Play the shared 5-letter daily, a 7-letter Long daily, or an Unlimited run of 5, 6, 7-letter or mixed-length words.

How to play

  • Type a real word of the puzzle length and press Enter. Locked tiles (padlock) are the right letter in the right spot, loose tiles (ring) are in the word but somewhere else.
  • The Daily and Long daily give everyone the same word each day, once each, with a countdown to the next puzzle and a shareable result grid.
  • In Unlimited, choose 5, 6 or 7 letters or Mixed. Each word you crack builds your streak and score, longer words score more, and the run ends on the first word you miss.
  • Lock Chain is a 2-minute race of 5-letter words: each answer is played automatically as your first guess on the next word, a crack adds time and a miss costs time. It is a practice mode: not ranked, no XP.

Controls

Tap the on-screen keys or type on a keyboard. Enter to guess, Backspace to erase, Esc to pause an Unlimited run.

More about Letter Lock

Letter Lock rewards careful deduction more than a big vocabulary. Every guess has to be a real word of the right length, so each one is both a test and a clue. The skill it trains is using the locked and loose tiles to narrow down possibilities, and choosing a guess that rules out as many letters as it can instead of just repeating what you already know.

A run can go three ways. The Daily is a shared 5-letter puzzle, and the Long daily is a 7-letter one, each played once per day. Unlimited chains word after word until one gets past you, in 5, 6, 7-letter or mixed lengths. Lock Chain is a 2-minute practice race of 5-letter words.

Scoring and progress

Each cracked word scores 100 × (7 minus the number of guesses you used), with a minimum of 100. Six-letter words are multiplied by 1.25 and seven-letter words by 1.5. Every word in a row adds a streak bonus of 25 points, up to 250. Hard adds a speed bonus of up to 180 per word. A run is capped at 30,000 points. Grades run from D to S, and the dailies are graded by how few guesses you needed.

Common questions

Why is my guess rejected?
Every guess must be a real word of the puzzle's length. On Hard, strict rules also require you to keep locked letters in place and reuse letters you have already found.

Does Lock Chain count toward my score or XP?
No. Lock Chain is a practice mode. It keeps its own best chain but is not ranked and gives no XP.

How many tries do I get?
Five and six-letter words give 6 tries and seven-letter words give 7. Easy adds one extra try on top of that.

Tips and strategy

  • Open with a word that uses five different common letters. Repeated letters tell you less than fresh ones in the first guess or two.
  • Fewer guesses pay more. A word cracked on guess 2 scores 500, while one cracked on guess 6 scores only 100, so avoid wasting early guesses on tiny changes.
  • Use your locked tiles. If a letter is locked in position three, keep it there and spend the other spaces testing new letters.
  • On Hard, strict rules require every locked letter to stay in place and every found letter to be reused. This helps you avoid sloppy guesses, but you must plan ahead because you cannot probe freely.
  • Easy gives one extra try and a hint button in Unlimited, which is a good place to practice longer words before switching to Medium for steadier scoring.
  • Protect your streak in Unlimited. The streak bonus grows by 25 per word up to 250, so a long run is worth far more than any single fast solve.
